- Story Text: Members of Hollywood's elite vied for a hole-in-one
at the American Film Institute's Annual Golf Classic Monday at
the exclusive Riviera Golf Club in Los Angeles.
Some of Hollywood's top duffers including Clint
Eastwood, Andy Garcia, Greg Kinnear, Dennis Hopper, James
Woods and Joe Pesci were among those who teed off in support
of film preservation. While most mumbled pieties about their
support of the day's charity, Greg Kinnear appeared more
realistic. "All these actors show up and they try to act real
passive about it," said Kinnear, before mimicking his
colleagues by saying; "'I'm just here to have a good time and
support the AFI,' but they're wildly competitive, is what I've
learned over the years. So you have to bring, as Shaquille
O'Neal would say, your 'A' game."
Most celebrities seemed to leave their "A" game at home
in favor of a leisurely afternoon. "My strategy is to have
fun," said Samuel L. Jackson. "That's all you come to these
things to do, to have fun and enjoy the people you're playing
with and maybe win, who knows."
When asked if he was excited about his game, the ever
laconic Eastwood didn't veer from his cool reputation, saying
"I'm never too excited but I'm okay, I'm here."
That seemed to sum up the day, as no hole-in-ones were
had and few birdies were in sight, the game resembled golf.
