- Story Text: Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks and the animated feature 'Shrek' were the big winners at the 28th Annual People's Choice awards in Pasadena, California on Sunday (January 13).
Julia Roberts proved she is still Hollywood's favourite pretty woman when she won the People's Choice award for favourite actress. Roberts, who starred this year in "America's Sweethearts" and "Ocean's 11" took the award from Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lopez who was also nominated for favourite female musician.
Tom Hanks won two awards, edging out last year's winner, Mel Gibson, and Denzel Washington, as favourite movie actor, and beating Washington and Anthony Hopkins as favourite movie star in a drama.
The fans remained especially loyal in the music category. Country stars Garth Brooks and Faith Hill were named favourite individual performers in a repeat of last year's results. Pop group N*Sync was also picked again as favourite musical group or band, beating out the Backstreet Boys and Dixie Chicks.
The star of "Dr Doolittle" and "Shrek" - Eddie Murphy - won the award for favourite actor in a comedy and the animated feature Shrek also took home the favourite motion picture, beating out competition from " The Fast and the Furious" and "Pearl Harbor".
In the Television awards, "Friends" won both the favourite comedy series and Jennifer Aniston took home the award for favourite actress. ER, the medical drama now in its eighth season also proved to be the people's favourite.
The awards were based on the results of a nation-wide telephone tally conducted by the independent polling firm the Gallup Organization between November 2000 and October 2001.
The early cut-off in the polling meant respondents, who were able to name any performer or series they liked, had not seen movie hits such as "Monsters, Inc." and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," both of which were released in November.
