- Story Text: Ballet Hispanico's Besame had its exuberant world premier at New York's Joyce Theater, a sensual performance that examines the different experiences of love.
Ballet Hispanico has just opened their new season at the Joyce Theatre in New York City, starting with their world premiere of Besame (Kiss Me) by the Barcelona choreographer Ramon Oler.
The Ballet Hispanico dancers explore, through three acts, the themes of love and relationships, accompanied by classic Latin love songs. The first act is a poignant display by older lovers facing death, and who will be separated.
The second, in dramatic contrast, shows four teenagers beginning to fall in love, and displays the exuberance of this feeling. The last act shows a man who is unable to connect with people. His feelings of loneliness are externalised through a moving dance.
Ballet Hispanico was founded by artistic director Tina Ramirez in 1970. Throughout this time, it has commissioned over 70 new works, which fuse contemporary American and Hispanic dance, bridging cultural divides.
Ramirez recruits her troupe from a diversity of backgrounds. All she looks for is their ability to express the rhythms and sensuality of the Latin music.
The troupe has had great success, earning a Hispanic Heritage Award for its contribution to Hispanic culture in the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
