- Story Text: The Viña del Mar Song Festival, a popular annual rite showcasing singers from all over the world, has ended with Argentina as champion this year.
Puerto Rican singer Chayanne was opened the international part of the festival on Monday (February 25) and once again wooed the more than 15,000 fans packing the stands.
Chayanne said that the Viña del Mar experience had been intense and thanked the public for all the support he had during his appearance.
After Chayanne, Chile's most important singer, Myriam Hernandez, took the stage for a grueling performance of more than one hour. She sang her most successful themes, among them "Herida" ("Wounded"), "Se me fue" ("Got Away from me") and "Hombre Secreto" ("Secret Man").
The annual Viña del Mar Song Festival ended on Monday night in that resort Chilean city with Argentine singer Oscar Patino emerging as the winner.
Patino interpreted "Soy to Angel" ("I'm your Angel), written by Ricardo Pald.
The annual Viña del Mar festival has become a must for Latin American singers, both seasoned and junior, and according to industry insiders, it is so important that it can make or break entire careers.
The winning song was awarded $30,000 and the "Silver Seagull," the festival's symbol, but most importantly it received instant recognition throughout Latin America.
The Costa Rican singer Duvallier Quiroz received $10,000 and a "Silver Seagull" as recognition to the Best Interpretation for his work on "La Negra" ("The Black Girl"), written by Goevanny Barrantes.
Hosts to the last evening of the Viña del Mar Song Festival were Antonio Vodanovic and Cecilia Bolocco, the wife of former Argentine president Carlos Menem.
Other participants in the festival's closing evening included Chilean singer Cecilia Echenique, Argentine singer and author Victor Heredia and Fito Paez, also from Argentina. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
