- Story Text: For the first time ever, a Peruvian singer, Susana Baca, has been nominated to receive a prestigious Grammy award.
A little known and old lullaby of African influence propelled Susana Baca as the first ever Peruvian singer nominated to receive a Grammy award.
She has not even chosen her shoes for the awards ceremony, but her nomination has already lined her up for a long world tour and a brand new album to try to rescue old traditional Peruvian songs.
Baca, known to the world thanks to her Afroperuvian songs promoted by Scottish soloist David Byrne, was nominated along with Chicano group "Los Lobos" for their album "Canto." Baca is a guest performer in that album with the nominated theme, "Drume Mobila", a lullaby of African origins.
The album "Canto" is nominated in the Traditional Latin Tropical category. If she wins, with or without shoes she will have to get up on stage next Wednesday along with Los Lobos.
Baca confesses that she prefers not to wear shoes and says that she never jumps on a stage with shoes. She said that she received an e-mail informing her of her nomination and inviting her to appear in the awards ceremony. "It was like a dream," said the veteran artist with a 30 year-long career.
"Canto" will compete against the Brazilian Caetano Veloso's "Qualquem Coisa." "Canto" includes classics such as "Siboney" and "Me voy p'al Pueblo."
Baca will travel Sunday to Los Angeles, where she will spend a day with the media and a day before the awards ceremonies she will assist to the artists party where she will have a chance to see her rivals and have a friendly drink with them. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
