- Story Text: Oscar nominee Judi Dench and Kevin Spacey braved the rain for a special charity premiere of, 'The Shipping News' in London, in aid of, 'The Old Vic Theatre Trust'. Spacey, the star of the film performed in 'The Iceman has Cometh' at the Old Vic in 1998 and has assisted the theatre in its artistic policy for the past four years. Former US President Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea made a surprise appearance at the premiere.
The weather hadn't improved much on how it was the night before for the Baftas, but that didn't stop the stars of 'The Shipping News' from getting their heels on for a special UK Charity Premiere of the movie.
Based on E. Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, the film chronicle's the story of Quoyle, (Kevin Spacey) a third-rate newspaperman. Quoyle, a hapless, lonely upstate New Yorker, takes a journey of self-discovery when he loses his estranged wife (Cate Blanchett) in a car accident. Stricken with grief and longing, he retreats with his aunt (Judi Dench) and young daughter to Newfoundland, the mysterious home of his ancestors.
In the small fishing outport of Killick-Claw, Quoyle secures a job as a reporter at the local newspaper, "The Gammy Bird."
With each article he writes, his understanding of this quirky community sharpens, along with his sense of himself.
Gradually, a romance develops with Wavey, (Julianne Moore) a local woman who lives with her own heartache. As Quolye's new life unfolds so his grief subsides and he reconciles his past with his present."
Playing the staff of the "Gammy Bird" is a geographically diverse cast including Scott Glenn from the US who plays the paper's owner, Rhys Ifans of Wales, and Pete Postlethwaite of Great Britain. A local, Newfoundlander Gordon Pinsent, is also in the cast.
Quoyle may be a less demonstrative role than some of Spacey's past characters whose wit and irony have often been the driving force behind the movies he's starred in. But the style compliments the poetry of the film's story which director Lasse Hallstrom unfolds in a subtle tapestry of comedy and drama. Academy Award nominee Hallstrom also directed the magical "My Life as a Dog," "Cider House Rules," and "Chocolat."
At it's heart, 'The Shipping News' is about family and people coming to terms with their past, their future and how a place and a community can shape lives, heal individuals and give them back their sense of who they are.
The Shipping News opens in cinemas in London on March 1st and nationwide on March 8th. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
