- Story Text: Disney's cartoon adventure "Lilo and Stitch" has made a strong showing at the North American box office. It's the story of a Hawaiian girl and her alien pal, with a strong emphasis on family overcoming problems.
Disney's latest cartoon adventure is called "Lilo and Stitch." Early in the movie, audiences learn Lilo's parents died in an accident that left her under the guardianship of her 19 year-old sister, Nani. Owing to her loss, Lilo has become unruly in school, and she is disliked by her schoolmates. Meanwhile, on the far-off planet of Turo, an experiment has created a blue, six-legged creature that is "bulletproof, fireproof and can think faster than a supercomputer." But "Experiment 626" (Stitch) also gets a kick out of doing disgusting things. Moreover, he was created to destroy everything he touches and when he does, he is put in prison. He quickly escapes and travels to Earth, where he lands in Hawaiian paradise.
"I think through their work they represented Hawaii extremely well and with a real sensitivity to the culture to the feeling of the place and the imagery of the place and the actual voices and the characters," Jason Scott Lee said. Lee plays the role of Nani's boyfriend, David.
At first, "Experiment 626" is taken to be a dog and through a series of circumstances is adopted by Lilo and named Stitch. Thus, the two are paired in a sort of unholy alliance of bad manners and destructive methods. Things go horribly at first. But when Lilo finally reveals her plight, the pair forges a bond that stems from their lack of a normal family.
The concept of family, of course, has changed in recent years to include extended families and community, which are embodied in the Hawaiian word, "ohana." Daveigh Chase plays the role of Lilo:
"Nani wants to take Stitch back after Lilo gets him because he's just a little destructive maniac guy.
And he really is kind of cute. But Lilo, she's all, Ohana!, Ohana means family and that means nobody gets left behind or forgotten."
