- Story Text: Montreux Jazz Festival played host to an all-star pure jazz combo featuring guitar legend John Scofield, appearing in a double bill with swamp-rock maestro Dr. John.
The 36th Montreux Jazz Festival, in the picturesque setting alongside Lake Leman provided festival goers with what it is most famous for - some good old fashioned jazz. The collective musical talents of Jon Scofield, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano and Al Foster, who are long time collaborators, provided a set of pure jazz improvisations.
Guitarist John Scofield told Reuters Television that such creative interactions were the lifeblood of his music.
"You know what I have found, it has to be different, when you try to make it the same, the tendency is, wow that was good last night lets try and do it again, its never as good...So you have to be loose and spontaneous and so every night its different, and that's the only way the music feels right, to me, and its taken me years to figure that out."
As well as the band he appeared with in Montreux, all firm favourite of jazz aficionados, Scofield has jammed alongside all the greatest names in his field, including the legendary Miles Davis, with whom "Sco" as he is affectionately known got his first big break. He is also always keen to work with new people, as every new partnership adds to his musical experience.
"First of all its a thing with the other musicians where we are all talking to each other and that makes this group thing and the audience picks up on that and you can tell if they are with you and if they are with you its the greatest feeling in the world. The great thing about music is that you evolve by working with these people and you hear the way they do something and you incorporate it into what you do, it comes out different because you are a different person, and I love that."
Scofield's latest release entitled Uberjam shows that he is not only interested in traditional jazz forms. The album takes on board new styles and new technology, including sampling, and incorporates them into Scofield's sound.
Sharing the bill with Scofield and co. was Dr John, who delivered a set of inimitable cajun infused blues.
