The 2002 CCTV-MTV Music Honors on Friday (July 26) brought together a glittering array of stars in Beijing, saluting artists who have made a significant contribution to the global, Asian and Chinese music industry.
Hong Kong singers Leon Lai (pron: lee-on lai) and Anita Mui (pron: mwui) were honoured for their work by being presented with lifetime achievements awards at the ceremony.
The 38-year-old Mui was overwhelmed by the award.
"I haven't received any awards for a long time, I am so happy about this. This award is a kind of 'comfort award' for me," she said.
American-born Chinese Wang Lee Hom (pron: wang lee hoong) was announced Taiwan Male Artist of the Year. The 24-year-old singer has recently remixed the Chinese pop song "Descendant of Dragon", infusing it with his own experiences of living in a Western society.
"I'm also a son of the dragon, a musician with black eyes, black hair and yellow skin. I feel a sense of achievement that I can produce Chinese music in China, even though I wasn't born here. The Chinese pop circle has always been giving me inspiration," Wang said.
Besides honouring artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, MTV also bestowed accolades on three international artists, among them billboard chart topper Darren Hayes. The former lead singer of the Australian band Savage Garden was awarded the International Male Artist of the Year.
"I want to say thank you so much to MTV and CCTV and everyone here in China, God bless you," Hayes said.
Asia's sexy diva CoCo Lee received the award Female Artist of the Year for Pan Asia. Born in Hong Kong and raised in San Francisco, she has been hugely successful in Asia and has just released an English album, aiming for a breakthrough in America.
"I will go anywhere my fans need me to be. I hope that I can satisfy my fans everywhere. The most important thing is that they will love every one of my albums. I'm so lucky to have my fans who support me," Lee said.
Mainland band Yu Quan (pron: yu tchyuen) won the award for Chinese Pop Band of the Year. Band member Chen Yufan (pron: tchen yu-fun) commented on the huge success of musicians from Hong Kong and Taiwan in China.
"Pop music in Hong Kong and Taiwan started to develop many years earlier than on the mainland. They are advanced in both creation and production, compared with the mainland. And I also think, 'when a thing is scarce, it is precious.' Fans from the mainland seldom see stars come from Hong Kong and Taiwan because they rarely come to the mainland, therefore, mainland fans are more interested in singers who come from Hong Kong or Taiwan," Chen said.
During the performances, canto pop-king Leon Lai thrilled the audience with "Charged Up" -- the official Asian song for the 2002 World Cup.
Asia's favourite pop darlings Anita Mui, CoCo Lee, Sammy Cheng (pron: tcheng), Elva Hsiao (pron: hsiao), Na Ying (pron: na yeeng) and J.T.L. also captured the crowd with their hits.
Honorees were also selected by a panel comprising broadcast personalities from MTV and CCTV. The ceremony was jointly hosted by MTV Networks Asia and China Central Television, China's national TV network.
