- Story Text: Producer and director Bruce Paltrow, the father of Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and husband of actress Blythe Danner, has died in Rome following a bout of pneumonia and a recurrence of throat cancer.
The fifty-eight-year-old television producer, Bruce Paltrow, was in Italy to celebrate his daughters 30th birthday and was believed to have died early on Thursday morning (October 3, 2002). He had suffered from throat cancer and heart problems.
Paltrow helped produce some of television's best-regarded series of recent decades, including "Homicide: Life on the Street," hospital drama "St. Elsewhere" and "The White Shadow."
Late on Thursday afternoon his Oscar-winning daughter Gwyneth Paltrow along with brother Jake, visited his body at the morgue at Romes San Camillo hospital.
Spokesman Stephen Huvane, in a statement issued in Los Angeles, said Paltrow's wife, the actress Blythe Danner, was flying from Los Angeles to join her daughter in Rome.
An official at the U.S. embassy in Rome said he had been contacted about repatriating the body to the United States.
The Paltrows had been staying at the villa of Italian designer, Valentino in Tuscany. They are now staying at an apartment in the central shopping district of Rome, close to the Spanish steps and next door to a Valentino shop.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, Paltrow began his career in theatre in the late 1960s before moving into television and film. He married stage actress Danner in 1970, and the couple had two children, Gwyneth and Jake. He made his feature directorial debut with the 1982 film "A Little Sex,"
starring Kate Capshaw and Tim Matheson.
Most recently he wrote and directed his daughter in the 2000 feature film comedy Duets, a story about a father and daughter who come together through a shared love of karaoke.
