- Story Text: In an interview with Capital Radio DJ Dr Fox, Pop Idol winner Will Young finds out that his double A-side record 'Evergreen/Anything Is Possible' is the fastest selling debut record ever in the UK, taking him to number one after its first six days in the charts.
Pop Idol Winner Will Young jumped straight into the e UK charts as number one on Sunday with his double A-side cord 'Evergreen/Anything is Possible'.
The singer heard the news that he'd topped the UK charts whilst doing an interview with Capital Radio DJ Dr. Fox. The single sold over 1 million copies, beating the sales record held by Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?', making it the fastest selling UK debut single to date.
The only other song to have sold more in a week was Elton John's re-release of Candle In the Wind for Princess Diana's funeral.
A clearly shocked Will Young said "I'm just so elated"
and wiped tears from his eyes when presented with a plaque to celebrate his number one achievement and in becoming the fastest selling debut artist of all time.
The 22 year old won 'Pop Idol', a televised talent competition, after he beat 10,000 hopefuls in ITV's nationwide search with over 4.6 million votes.
The question now is for how long he can stay at number one.
He faces the prospect of being ousted from the position when Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates releases his debut single, 'Unchained Melody' on March 18.
Young's record company BMG have high hopes for his success and he will be appearing at the Party at the Palace concert to mark the Queen's jubilee in June. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
