- Story Text: Hollywood swept into the shores of Normandy this weekend as the small coastal town of Deauville played host to the 28th American Film Festival. The event got going with a warm, light-hearted appetizer, Jon Sherman's, "I'm With Lucy" which stars David Boreanaz and Monica Potter.
The quiet Normandy beach town of Deauville usually plays host to weekend visitors escaping the stresses of urban-life. They come to rest on the beach and try their luck in the town's casinos. The restful rhythm of this peaceful resort, situated in the heart of the Calvados region was awakened this weekend by the arrival of Hollywood stars and film-makers as the town played host to the American Film Festival for the twenty eighth year.
And how better to start ten days of awards, premiers, tributes and parties than with Jon Sherman's romantic comedy, "I'm With Lucy" starring Monica Potter, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal and television's most loved vampire, David Boreanaz. Sherman said it was thrilling and overwhelming to open the festival which has been gaining an international reputation in recent years amongst press and filmmakers.
That reputation's been partly built up by the instigation of a competition section reserved for American independents.
Mark Romanek's "One-Hour Photo" starring Robin Williams and Charles Herman-Wurmfeld's, "Kissing Jessica Stein" are just two of the highlights of this section which has put Deauville on the festival map. For the first time this year winners will receive a trophy created by the jeweller Fred, "The Flame of Deauville", symbolising the passion that seals the work of the independent film-making sector.
Deauville also offers the opportunity to honour some of the industry's greats in an atmosphere that's more relaxed and intimate than either Cannes or Venice. This year the festival pays tribute to actress Ellen Burstyn, actors Harrison Ford and Matt Dillon, producer Robert Evans and the late film director, John Frankenheimer who died several weeks ago aged
Other highlights in this year's festival include premiers of, Callie Khouri's, "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood", Doug Liman's "The Bourne Identity" and Matt Dillon's directoral debute, "City of Ghosts". There's also a lesson in cinema from "Possession" director, Neil LaBute.
