- Story Text: The latest girl group to grab the public's attention is Tatu, who's naughty lyrics and barely legal lesbian themes are making pop's sexy princess Britney Spears look like a nun.
The feisty brunette Julia and soulful redhead Lena, who make up the Moscow based teen girl group Tatu, are creating some ripples with their evocative lyrics and lesbian inspired themes.
With their video, "All the things she said" the story of a love affair between two young girls, becoming MTV Russia's "Video of the Year" Tatu have become the most explosive and controversial act to emerge from Eastern Europe in years.
After selling over a million records in Europe the tempestuous teens are ready to conquer America. Lena Katina says that she's confident they will succeed for several reasons.
"First of all there are no Russian groups in America. The second reason is, in different countries, everywhere there are American singers but in those countries where they are," says Katina. "For example, in Russia where there are Russian singers, they are unknown in America or in Europe so we wanted to be not like everybody. I think that we'll do it."
Their pop/ electronic based sound, enticed esteemed producer Trevor Horn to work with Tatu on their English language versions of their singles "200 km/h in the Wrong lane." Horn who has worked with 'The Pet Shop Boys," "Seal,"
and "Simple Minds" has compared Tatu to the well known group Prodigy.
The girls say that they loved every minute of working with him. "He is very good as a person and it is very easy to work with him because he is very understandable, and when came first in his studio, he said, "Hi Laila, Hi Julia.' And we were like his children. He is great. He is talented."
And how do the girls feel about being branded as lesbians? " We are together and we feel great. We don't want anybody to be with us."
Whether their racy image is natural or carefully crafted, the trick seems to have worked, and the suggestive performers are already winning fans across the globe.
