- Story Text: He's spent the last seven years as a member of one of the world's most successful pop acts, NSYNC. But now Justin Timberlake is going solo. Reuters spoke to Timberlake about his debut solo album 'Justified' and how it feels to go it alone.
Lead singer of American boy-band NSync Justin Timberlake has launched a solo career. While his fellow NSync-er Lance Bass attempts to launch himself into space, Timberlake has been aiming for solo success in the pop charts.
His new single 'Like I Love You' is directly influenced by Michael Jackson. Some critics say the debut album 'Justified' is the album Michael Jackson would have gone on to make if he had fulfilled his potential in the '80s. Hip-hop producers, the Neptunes, say Justin could have been raised in the black church. And the other producers working on the album are equally impressive, Bubba Sparx, Timbaland and P Diddy.
Its not a bad launch pad for an ex-boy band star. Although Timberlake was reaching for the stars long before founder member of NSync Chris Kirkpatrick contacted him about joining a band that would end up selling millions of records. At the age of eight, the young Timberlake was serial-entering TV talent competitions. At 12, he got picked up for children's variety show The Mickey Mouse Club; where he went on to meet fellow Mouseketeer Britney Spears. That was ten years ago, where they shared their first kiss on screen. The pop world's favourite sweethearts broke up this year.
Now a single man, there have been rumours that Timberlake had an affair with Janet Jackson, who he records a duet with on the album. "I called her up and I went and played her the song and asked if she wanted to be a part of it and she said yeh so it wasn't really anything that anybody had to think about, we just went in the studio together and recorded her part and I'm so happy and so gracious (means grateful) that somebody who was such a superstar can be so humble and so sweet and still such a perfectionist cos watching her work in the studio was like a breath of fresh air for me cos I'm such a perfectionist and I don't see a lot of people like that a lot so she's a class act."
A class act who clearly considers Timberlake in the same light. For a 21 year-old fresh out of a boyband to have secured the names and talent associated with 'Justified', Justin Timberlake could prove himself where others before have failed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
