- Story Text: Old school country star Glen Campbell is celebrating the dawn of 2003 by releasing a retrospective collection.
Campbell's new CD includes numerous country and pop classics from the singer/songwriter recorded during a career that has spanned over 25 years. The performer who rose from a simple country upbringing to international fame in the late 1960s talks candidly about his music and life lessons learned.
Glen Campbell started his musical career at a young age when he left his country up bringing and hit the road to pursue his dream. After honing his skills on the road for nearly a decade, Campbell moved to Los Angeles and began working as a session musician. In 1961, the 24 year old musician hit the Los Angels studio scene. The tall and charismatic Campbell helped Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley and Ann Margret record as a session musician.
"All eyes were on Elvis, man he was this whole center of attraction but when Ann Margret walked in because the majority of musicians in the studio were male, not musicians but you know the quartet. She was a looker, is a looker but anyway, all eyes went on her and off of Elvis, I said you got a little competition," said Campbell of his time in the recording studio with Elvis Presley and Ann Margret.
After performing on American television in the summer of 1968, CBS executives offered the fledgling star his own series. The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour was viewed by 50 million people each week and the talented host became a household name across America. His songs became popular the world over as the singer had amazing cross-over appeal.
"They were just songs that hit me. I wanted to do. I wanted to satisfy, I figured if I satisfied myself, my taste would be pretty similar to a lot of other peoples and sure enough it was song wise. Everybody longs for home occasional everybody wants to go somewhere occasionally everybody wants to do something. And I picked my songs around that," said Campbell.
Campbell, who may be best known for his song "Rhinstone Cowboy" recently re-recorded an updated version of the hit with English musical artists Rikki and Daz.
Cambell has sold over 40 million records and has appeared on countless recordings as an in demand session guitarist and is popular in a varity of countires. The music make has had a career that has seen highes and deep lows. Now his fans can reach for "Glen Campbell all the Best" a CD that features 25 classic hits. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
