- Story Text: A host of Europe's top-selling recording artists including Spice Girl Mel C, Phil Collins, Jean-Michel Jarre and Irish quartet The Corrs have gathered in Brussels for the Third Platinum Europe Awards.
In recognition of the best-selling recording artists in Europe, the Platinum Europe Awards, organised by the International Federation for the Phonographic Industry, were hosted by former Genesis drummer and solo artist, Phil Collins.
Attended by senior European politicians including Commission President Romano Prodi and Senior Vice President Neil Kinnock, the awards honoured an elite number of European artists who have sold more than one million copies of an album in Europe.
Irish beauties, The Corrs were presented with an award for selling more than ten million albums in the last two years while Jean-Michel Jarre was given a special award to recognise his contribution to the European music industry. He handed over the baton of Artist Spokesperson for the European Music Industry to The Corrs earlier in the day.
Since the last Platinum Europe Awards, a total of 118 new albums have reached platinum status (1 000 000 units) with artists hailing from ten different European nations.
Spice Girl Mel C expressed her delight in collecting her first award for her solo efforts.
Denmarks Aqua, Hevia and Alejandro Sanz from Spain, Sasha and Herbert Gronemeyer from Germany, Belgiums Helmut Lotti and The Cardigans from Sweden were among 139 artists to have achieved platinum status. Many of them were in town to collect their prestigious prizes.
The awards ceremony provided an opportunity for the IFPI which represents recording industry worldwide, to highlight the current threat to musicians livelihoods, internet piracy in a period where piracy is rife on the net and European politicians are deciding on the future of copyright law in the community.
Flattered to be asked to represent the music industry in Europe, The Corrs declared they would put as much energy and effort into presenting the case of recording artists in Europe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
