- Story Text: - The Spice Girls, U2, Ricky Martin and Luis Miguel were among musicians honoured on Thursday (November 20) at Spain's Premios Amigos award ceremony - a brand new latin version of the Grammys.
The first edition of the Spanish music awards was kicked off by Britain's Spice Girls, who sang "Spice Up Your Life". The five were awarded the "Amigo" for Best New International Artist.
In all, 15 awards were given to honour the best artists, groups and albums from the world over.
Alejandro Sanz, Paul Carrack and Luis Miguel were awarded prizes for best male soloists in the Spain, International and Latino categories respectively.
Gloria Estefan was the only artist given two awards - one for Best Female Soloist and the other Best Latin Album for "Abriendo Puertas." U2 was awarded an "Amigo" for Best International Group while Donato and Stefano were the winners in the Latin category.
Ricky Martin was given special credit for the sales of his single "Maria," a popular hit which had half the world dancing last summer.
Although most of the Spanish artists attended the ceremony, many of the international artists who were awarded "Amigos" did not make it, including Gloria Estefan, U2 and Luis Miguel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
