- Story Text: It was a good night for The Dave Matthews Band at the second annual My VH1 Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (December 2), as they picked up prizes in four categories voted for online by fans. But amid the wins, some of the music industry's hottest stars mourned a great loss, paying tribute to former Beatle George Harrison who died Thursday.
The second annual My VH1 Music Awards started on a touching note with Bon Jovi performing "Here Comes the Sun" in tribute to former Beatle George Harrison who passed away on Thursday (November 29). Guests of the show commented on the loss of the legendary musician.
"Instead of mourning his passing I think we should celebrate his life. He had a wonderful life in the 58 years he was here. He gave the world so much and that's the way I want to remember him I think.", said actor Gary Sinise.
After the somber opening, the show kicked into high gear with a performance by No Doubt, led by Gwen Stefani who picked up the award for Favorite Female Artist.
The Dave Matthews Band quickly started racking up honors. The group picked up four of five My VH1 Music Awards for which they were nominated, in such irreverent categories as "Damn I Wish I Wrote That!" for their single "The Space Between" and "Must Have Album" for "Everyday," which beat out the Beatles' greatest hits release "1". Commenting on their many wins Dave Matthews said, "This night is a little bit ridiculous. To our fans, you know, thank you so much that's nice of you to vote and I've been listening to that "#1"
album" by the Beatles and it kicks the crap out of our album, but it's still nice of you to vote. Thank you."
Lenny Kravitz, who was voted Favorite Male Artist, pleased fans with a rocking finale with Mick Jagger. The two collaborated on "God Gave Me Everything," the first single from Jagger's latest solo effort "Goddess in the Doorway."
In the "Is it Hot in Here Or Is It Just My Video?"
category, the sexy remake of "Lady Marmalade" took the prize.
From "Moulin Rouge," featuring Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, the clip also won for Favorite Music Video.
With international flair, British alternative rockers Coldplay took home two prizes, "Best Kept Secret" and the "Big in Japan" category, which recognized the groups worldwide starpower.
Other performances included unexpected duet between Sting and Mary J. Blige. Other awards included:
"Your Song Kicked Ass But Was Played Too Damned Much," given to "It's Been A While," by Staind; "Welcome to the Big Time," awarded to Alicia Keys; and "Navel Academy (Best Bellybutton Appearance)," given to Britney Spears.
