- Story Text: British director Danny Boyle earned a Golden Globe nomination for his work on the film "Slumdog Millionaire" on Thursday (December 11).
The film also earned a nomination in the "Best Motion Picture - Drama" category, along with "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" that garnered five nominations.
"Slumdog Millionaire" tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who tries his luck at the game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?". Surprisingly, Malik does really well, and quickly makes his way to earning millions of rupees -- this raises a red flag with the show's host and Malik gets arrested on suspicion of cheating.
The role of Malik is played by British actor Dev Patel, who was overjoyed by the nominations -- particularly because it's his first feature film.
"I cannot believe it. I'm sitting there doing an interview and it, it didn't sink in. And it's still not fully sunk in right now," Patel said.
The film is based on a book called "Q and A" by writer Vikas Swarup, and was adapted for the screen by Simon Beaufoy, the man behind "The Full Monty". It was shot in Mumbai in an effort to stay true to the script.
Boyle talked about how it was to film in India, since it was his first time there.
"Well it's, it's, it's, it's sort of like, you feel overwhelmed by that kind of reception. You have to remember who helped us make the film really. And the film was a kind of tribute to that city, Mumbai, Bombay, as they still refer to it all as Bombay. And it's, it's for them, I feel so happy. Cause it's interesting it's the home of Bollywood, it feels like a different place from Hollywood but they are looking at each other a lot more these days, you can feel that happening, you know, in business terms, and in cultural terms. I think this is a wonderful kind of letter between them really I guess," he said.
"Slumdog Millionaire" was screened at the Toronto and London Film Festivals earlier this year. It's due out on January 23, 2009. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
