- Story Text: 75,000 people gathered in London's Hyde park to be entertained by Dame Shirley Bassey, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross among others. Prince Charles and his date for the night, British actress Joan Collins, attended the show which raised money for The Prince's Trust.
Dame Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and Rod Stewart were joined by younger stars Ronan Keating and Gabrielle at Hyde Park's first big concert of the summer season.
The world-renowned superstars all took time out from their demanding international tour schedules to come to London and entertain a crowd of 75,000 people in the presence of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales. £500,000 from ticket sales will go The Prince's Trust charity, which helps disadvantaged young people.
British actress Joan Collins sat by the side of Prince Charles throughout the concert which lasted for more than six hours - each of the performers' sets lasted about an hour.
Motown legend Diana Ross managed to get through five different gowns - accompanied by feathers and diamonds - as she performed a range of classics including Chain Reaction, Upside Down, Where Did Our Love Go and Endless Love. She was delighted to perform for His Royal Highness who she referred to as 'Prince Charming'.
It was a battle of the divas with Shirley Bassey performing with a stage presence and style that did not illustrate her 65 years. Opening her set with Goldfinger - the theme song to the Bond movie - she proceeded to sing a range of songs from Big Spender to Hey Jude. She chose to stay in the one frock for her time on stage.
Younger star Gabrielle was like an excited child at sharing the stage with such impressive performers. "I brought my son here today and I'll be telling this story to my grandchildren that I was on this amazing line-up, this bill with you know, Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Rod Stewart, should I say Dama Shirley Bassey. It's just amazing, I'm like a kid at the moment."
Rod Stewart came off the stage content with the audience reaction. "It was hard to hear them from where I was. But they all were, you know, women had their tits out, blokes had their other things out, their trousers were around their ankles, so I presume they had a good time."
Prince Charles's trousers stayed firmly up but that was no indication of the quality of the performance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
