- Story Text: The cast of "Kong: Skull Island" say the 70s set monster epic is full of messages and lessons that are as relevant today as they were then.
The film, which boasts an all star cast including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, approaches the classic movie monster's story from a whole new angle.
Hiddleston told Reuters: "I think the most powerful and timeless message is something to do with our relationship with nature and a healthy relationship with the natural world that actually makes us more human, not less."
Samuel L. Jackson added: "It all depends on who the audience member is. You have to be environmentally aware or have this whole animal rights thing happening for yourself or you have your attitudes about the war and man's incursion into nature or 'You picked this fight, you deserve what you get. You dropped those things down there and Kong was minding his own business, you guys started but he's trying to finish it'."
Brie Larson plays war photographer Mason Weaver who is a far cry from the damsel-in-distress style female role in previous Kong incarnations.
She told Reuters that her relationship with the iconic ape has been a long running thing, explaining: "I feel like my first memory of seeing one of the Kong movies was seeing Peter Jackson's one in theaters because I was like the only one that came out when I was alive but the original Kong the poster was in our living room when I was growing up so it's kind of weird."
Larson also explained how, as they were often filming in the middle of nowhere, they lacked some of life's luxuries that you might usually find on the set of a big, Hollywood movie. She said: "Sometimes I would use what you call a Portaloo but a lot of the time I just would like to go behind a bush because to get to the bathrooms it was really far away and I just have a real issue with like making a crew sit around and wait for ten minutes while I go pee. It was just easier to just like go around a boulder."
In "Kong: Skull Island," Hiddleston gets a chance to stretch his action muscles outside of the Marvel Universe in which he plays Loki. When asked about another well-known role he has been linked to, James Bond, and when he might start filming, he remained coy, saying: "It's all speculation. I'll leave you to keep guessing, it's all speculation."
