- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin accused the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) on Tuesday (June 14) of violating their self-rule accord by arresting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who had cooperated with Israel in the past.
Speaking at a news conference just outside the Palestinian self-rule area of Jericho, where he had toured Israeli military facilities and Jewish settlements, Rabin appeared to link the issue of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel to PLO treatment of collaborators.
"Anything related to the pursuit of collaborators is not in accordance with the agreement and therefore we will draw conclusions about everything related to the prisoner issue," he said, asked about recent arrests in the Gaza Strip.
Commenting on the way in which the Palestinians would use 42 million United States (U.S.) dollars worth of aid granted by donor countries to start up self-government in the area, Rabin said it lacked accountability.
The money will make it possible to pay Palestinian policemen patrolling areas in Jericho and Gaza, and launch projects to rehabilitate prisoners and wounded Palestinians.
Freih Abu Medein, who holds the justice portfolio in the Palestinian self-rule authority, said on Saturday Palestinian police have detained 26 people suspected of aiding Israeli occupation.
