  • Story Text: German Chancellor Helmut Kohl began his two-day tour of Israel on Tuesday (June 6) with a visit to the Yad Yasham memorial to the six million Jews killed in the Nazi Holocaust.

    Kohl also held a formal meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin.

    "One can look only with shame at what was done in the name of Germany to innocent people," Kohl said in a brief address at the Yad Vashem complex in Jerusalem.

    The German leader walked through the memorial's "Valley of the Destroyed Communities" -- stones marked with the names of towns whose Jewish population was annihilated. He said aloud the names of communities near his birthplace of Ludwigshaven.

    The 65-year-old chancellor is on a week-long Middle East tour that has already taken him to Egypt and Jordan. Yad Vashem, in the Jerusalem hills, is a regular stop for dignitaries who visit Israel.

    After the ceremony, Kohl met Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. The two were expected to discuss improved trade access for Israeli goods within the European Union.

    United States (U.S.) special Middle East peace envoy Dennis Ross met Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin on Monday (June 5) at the Defence Ministry in Tel Aviv.

    On the agenda was the renewal of talks in Washington between Israeli and Syrian military officials as well as the state of negotiations with Syria.

    After speaking with Rabin, Ross said: "The most important purpose of my visit and the upcoming visit of the Secretary (of State Warren Christopher) is to prepare for the meetings of military officials by the end of June." Ross is shuttling between Israel, Syria and Cairo in preparation for a visit by Christopher beginning on Thursday. The focus of the U.S. mission is to organise Israel-Syria talks on security aspects of their peace negotiations.
