- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, accompanied by an entourage of leading industrialists, arrived in Tokyo on Monday (December 12) on the first stop of a five-day visit to Japan and South Korea.
It is the first visit by an Israeli premier to either country.
Rabin flew in from Oslo where he shared the Nobel Peace Prize.
Japanese government officials have said they welcome the visit as ushering in a new period in bilateral ties, which in the past have been tenuous because of Tokyo's heavy reliance on Middle East crude oil supplies as a source of energy.
For decades, few Japanese or Korean companies risked breaking the Arab boycott to sell their products to Israel.
Rabin - who before leaving on his trip hailed the visit as coming at an opportune time - is likely to call for closer trade ties during his visit.
Exports to Japan rose 18 percent in the first nine months of 1994 to 681 million U.S. dollars.
Imports fell 14 percent to 690 million U.S. dollars, mainly because of the expensive yen.
