- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin returned to Israel from a visit to London on Wednesday (October 19) after a suspected Moslem suicide bomber killed 22 people in the heart of Tel Aviv.
A bomb in a morning rush-hour bus destroyed the vehicle and threw dead and dying passengers into the street as shocked pedestrians ran to help them.
Rabin ended his private visit to the United Kingdom as soon as he heard the news, and was driven to Tel Aviv's Defence Ministry from the airport for consultations with military commanders.
As he drove to the ministry, groups of right-wing demonstrators waved torches and chanted slogans against Rabin and against the peace agreement between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
At other locations in the city, including the scene of the bus explosion itself, demonstrators gathered to wave torches in the night sky and protest at what they called the sad state of security in Israel.
