- Story Text: Israelis reacted with shock to the news of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassination on Saturday night (November 4).
Candlelit vigils were held at the scene of the shooting and outside Rabin's home.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who took over as acting Prime Minister, paid tribute to his dead colleague. Speaking after an emergency cabinet meeting, Peres said Rabin was an exceptional man, a peacemaker who could not be fully replaced.
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat said he was very sad and shocked, and called the killing a terrible crime against a brave leader.
Opposition Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, a critic of Rabin's peace process, said those responsible for the crime were beyond the pale and must be kept there.
