- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, speaking at the site of Nazi horrors at Babi Yar, Ukraine, warned on Tuesday (September 12) that a new wave of anti-Semitism threatened Jews throughout the world.
Making the first visit to post-Soviet Ukraine by an Israeli leader, Rabin stood head bowed at the suburban ravine in Kiev where Nazi troops slaughtered more than 100,000 people -- mostly Jews -- beginning in September 1941, weeks after occupying the city.
"Today we face a growing threat of anti-Semitism in many countries. We must be vigilant and understand the threat posed to Jews," Rabin said in Hebrew next to a small menorah erected in 1991, on the 50th anniversary of the killings.
Rabin arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday to boost trade and political links with the former Soviet republic before a one-day visit to Russia. He signed several economic and trade agreements with Ukraine's Prime Minister Evgen Marchuk.
Rabin also laid flowers to the Memorial of Unknown Soldier in the capital Kiev before going on a tour of the city.
