- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister-designate Yitzhak Rabin named his cabinet on Sunday (July 12) within hours of the last cabinet meeting held by outgoing Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.
The Labour government to be presented to parliament on Monday, included ten first time ministers, including two women, in the 16 names. The two women, Ora Namir and Shulamit Aloni, took the environment and education portfolios.
Among key appointments, former Prime Minister Shimon Peres was appointed Foreign Minister and Iraqi born Moshe Shahal got the police and communications ministry.
Arye Deri, a representative of one of Labour's ultra religious coalition partners, Shas, was also named to the cabinet as Interior Minister.
Of the sixteen cabinet posts, 12 are Labour Party members and three from the left wing Meretz bloc.
Labour won 44 seats in the June election in the 120 member Knesset but holds a four seat majority through its coalition with other parties.
