- Story Text: Highway traffic stopped throughout the Jewish state for two minutes on Wednesday (May 3) and millions of Israelis stood at attention as sirens marked the national memorial day for soldiers.
A total of 18,220 soldiers have died since the Jewish state was created in 1948, most in wars between Israel and its Arab neighbours.
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin attended the main service at Mt. Herzel military cemetery in Jerusalem.
Hundreds of families wept silently at the graves of their loved ones.
The sombre mood will turn festive on Wednesday night when Israel's 47th Independence Day begins.
Five people were killed last year on the memorial day and about 30 were wounded by an Islamic suicide bombing in Hadera, north of Tel Aviv.
Fearing fresh attacks, Israel on Tuesday imposed an entry ban on all West Bank and Gaza Palestinians for the memorial day observance and Independence Day weekend celebrations due to begin on Wednesday evening.
Police and army units were placed on high alert.
The closure will end on Sunday (May 7th) after the Jewish Sabbath.
