- Story Text: Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) agreed on Thursday (September 9) to recognise each other, a PLO official said.
"The agreement is reached," the PLO official, who is close to the negotiations, told Reuters in Tunisia.
But in Jerusalem there was no immediate reaction to the report, and Israel's ministers were busy trying to win support for the results of their secret negotiations with the PLO.
On Thursday Israeli Prime Mininister Yitzhak Rabin spelt out that PLO chairman Yasser Arafat must punish any PLO member who refuses to halt the intifada, or uprising against Israel, to pave the way for peace between Israel and the PLO.
The prime minister's conditions for peace came as Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres was roundly heckled in the Knesset as he tried to rally support for the peace plan with the PLO.
Rabin was meeting members of his party's Labour faction to explain in more detail the pending agreement with the PLO. He played down fears that Arab countries would gain greater influence on the Palestinians of Gaza Strip and Jericho, due to have limited autonomy under the peace arrangements.
In Jerusalem a demonstration by right-wing Israelis against the peace accord continued in a road near the prime minister's office.
The demonstrators waved banners and placards condemning the PLO, Yitzhak Rabin and the media. The protest has continued for nearly two days, and on Tuesday night led to scuffles between demonstrators and police.
