- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat met for talks on Sunday (October 30) in Morocco, where both are due to attend a regional summit.
Rabin announced at the meeting that he would lift the closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The territories' boundaries were sealed following this month's Tel Aviv bombing in which 22 died.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and the PLO's Jerusalem representative Faisal Husseini also joined the talks.
Rabin said there would be a gradual easing of the closure provisions over the next week. But he warned that continued extremist Islamic attacks would result in Israel taking whatever action felt necessary in reply.
The Casablanca summit, hosted by Morocco's King Hassan, brings together government representatives, officials and businessmen from Israel, North Africa, and the Arab world.
The conference is aimed at capitalising on better political and diplomatic relations to focus on the development of the region's economies. Officials from all sides are approaching the meeting with a hope that the growing peace will be matched by economic growth.
Syria and Lebanon have rejected invitations to attend while Iraq and Iran were not invited. A follow-up economic conference, to be held in Amman, Jordan, is scheduled for next April.
