- Story Text: Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov met Israel's leadership and laid a wreath at Jerusalem's Holocaust memorial on Tuesday (March 25) as part of a two day visit to the region to promote dialogue.
Parvanov was greeted with an official welcoming ceremony by Israeli President Shimon Peres.
"So many Jews were saved during the Holocaust as a result of the Bulgarian nation's treatment of the Jewish people," Peres said during the ceremony.
Parvanov said he was optimistic that peace negotiations would move forward.
"We also understand expressions of fanaticism and of terror that endanger civilians. We are certain that the agreement in Annapolis will move the peace process forward and will resolve the conflict," Parvanov said.
Parvanov visited Jerusalem's Holocaust memorial of 'Yad Vashem' and participated in a ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance at the memorial. The President also lit a memorial flame and laid a wreath above a crypt holding the ashes of a few of the 6 million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust.
Bulgaria and Israel plan to sign agreements on economic cooperation and social security, during Parvanov's visit. He is scheduled to attend the opening of an exhibition in Israel's parliament, or Knesset, devoted to the Jewish community in Bulgaria.
Wednesday (May 26), Parvanov is expected to travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah where he is scheduled to meet the Palestinian leadership, and sign agreements for cooperation in education, science and culture. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
