- Story Text: Any unilateral Palestinian step towards statehood may bring unpredictable consequences, the Israeli foreign minister said on Monday (June 27) on a visit to Croatia.
"Any unilateral steps will damage the peace process and consequences of these unilateral steps are unpredictable," Avigdor Lieberman told a news conference in Zagreb.
The Palestinian leadership is seeking United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders in September.
Lieberman said a re-start of Palestinian-Israeli direct talks was the only way to break the political deadlock.
"We recognised two-state solution, it is maybe the first step of this government, Bar Ilan speech of our prime minister two years ago, we decided to sign a letter as a gesture of goodwill towards Palestinians for moratorium on all construction activities in the settlements for ten months, but the Palestinians decided to come every day with new preconditions, it was the settlements, it was the 1967 borders and other preconditions," he said.
Lieberman was this week visiting Croatia, Albania and Austria trying to convince those countries not to support the Palestinian move in the United Nations.
The Croatian foreign minister said the Balkan country will consult with the EU and U.S. before deciding whether to back a Palestinian statehood bid at the United Nations.
"Croatia is closely and thoroughly following the events. We will make our final decision on the matter after consultations with our allies in the European Union and the United States, but of course the decision will be based on our own estimates and analysis," Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic told the news conference. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
