- Story Text: An official Palestinian delegation, including several ministers of the western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's caretaker government, arrived at an Israeli hospital on Thursday (July 19), to pay a visit to several Palestinian children wounded in Gaza.
The children were hospitalised in Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv in June after they were seriously wounded during fierce factional fighting between Fatah and Hamas forces.
Palestinian Minister of Prisoner Affairs Ashraf al-Ajrami, accompanied by Tourism and Women Affairs Minister Kholoud Duaibes, toured Ichilov's Children's Surgical Department where they met with 9-year-old Fatten Hinawi, who was critically wounded last month, and now suffers from leg and arm injuries.
Hinawi's father attends to her in the hospital. The girl's mother remains in Gaza. Israeli restrictions allow only one parent to chaperone a wounded child.
Al-Ajrami said he hoped the factional fighting, which ended when Hamas forcefully seized Gaza Strip on June 14, would not resume and that Palestinians would restore law and order.
"What we have seen in the hospital is an indication of the size of the catastrophe that the Palestinian people have lived through. They have been killed or injured by their own people. This is a tragedy we do not want to see happen again in way," he said.
The ministers also visited other children including 14-year-old Mohamed Abdel Nabi who suffers from leg and spine injuries.
Some of the Palestinians who were injured in the battered coastal strip, mostly children in critical condition, are evacuated to Israel for medical treatment under an agreement between Ichilov hospital and al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, which suffers from a lack of medical equipment and medicine. Ichilov also treats Fatah officials wounded in battles.
A hospital spokeswoman said that both Hinawi and Abdel Nabi were making progress and were recovering from their critical injuries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
