- Story Text: Students at Tel Aviv University found an original way to promote AIDS awareness during their annual "student day" celebrations.
In cooperation with the Durex condoms brand and the Israel AIDS Task Force, the university's Students' Union on Thursday (May 13) positioned an 8.5-metre condom in the university's campus and encouraged students who were wearing little clothing to enter it.
Durex said it would donate 100 shekels ($26.6) to the AIDS Task Force for each student that enters the gigantic condom.
The organisers said that students inside the condom symbolized sperm cells.
Use of condoms is considered an effective way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS.
"I came here to have fun. There's great music, great gigs and there's lots of food, good food here and lots of great people. And I stumbled this thing, this Durex condom event. And it's a good thing to contribute to AIDS research," said Hilel, a student who took part in the fundraising event.
Ilan Cohen, the Vice President of Neopharm, the company which represents Durex in Israel, said that the event was beneficial.
"Except the fun, which everybody had in this event, I think it's very beneficial to the community, that the subject...awareness is much higher than before," Cohen said.
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, commonly known as HIV.
According to figures released in 2009 by UNAIDS, 25 million people have died of AIDS since the epidemic spread in the 1980s.
The World Health Organisation estimated in 2008 that about 33.4 million people live with AIDS worldwide. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
