- Story Text: Underwater photographers and video cameramen from around the world document Red Sea's aquatic life as part of annual competition held in the southern Israeli city of Eilat.
Scuba diving and art are not as different as they may seem, especially not in Eilat, an Israeli city at the shore of the Red Sea, where an underwater photography competition recently took place.
Scores of underwater photographers and cameramen arrived at the southern desert city from all over the world in the middle of November, to participate in the annual "Epson Red Sea" competition.
Carrying special lighting equipment and cameras, the competitors dived into the lucid Red Sea waters, where they documented corals, fish and other marine creatures.
Asked about the relations between the competition's participants, Robert Baley from the United Kingdom told Reuters that the atmosphere was "very nice".
"It's a very nice atmosphere here. I think everyone, although we compete against one another, we also work together, so it's a nice combination really," Baley said.
Some of the competitors produced short films featuring human actors.
"I'm cold. But it will go away once we start to move, you know," said an underwater model during filming rehearsal held in a local pool.
The "Epson Red Sea-World on underwater images" competition, which is sponsored by the Israeli Tourism Ministry, is held annually for the past five years.
There are several categories in the competition, including the best five images category and the best video-clip category.
Arturo Telle from Spain, who won the best five images category, received a ten thousand dollars prize.
"The feeling may be good about the pictures, but you don't know until it ends, until they say your name, you'd never know what will happen. And you don't know also what other people have done. So it's impossible to guess something about it. It's always the same expectation, always the same heart beating until the end," Telle said after the awards ceremony.
The winner in the video clip category was Israeli cameraman Eitan Nadel, who made a short 90 seconds underwater clip showing two women swimming and kissing amid fish and corals. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
