- Story Text: Israel's Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Centre on Wednesday (April 29) confirmed that two people suspected of having swine flu were being held in quarantine pending test results.
Two confirmed cases have already been reported in the country.
"We have now two patients hospitalized in our hospital, suspected to have swine flu. One of them is a child who was exposed on a flight to a patient with confirmed case of swine flu, and that developed fever and flu-like symptoms and was hospitalized here last night. His general condition is quite good, he still has fever but otherwise he is in good condition. The second person is a young man who has returned from Mexico after he has been there for more than a week and came with flu-like symptoms and fever. He is also in an excellent condition but will be hospitalized to continue with diagnosis and in order to isolate him," Professor Yehuda Carmeli, head of the epidemiology division in the hospital told reporters.
On Tuesday (April 28), Israel's health ministry confirmed its second case of swine flu, after tests showed a man who recently returned from Mexico and was hospitalised had contracted the virus.
Earlier the ministry said it had diagnosed Israel's first case of the disease, contracted by another man who had returned from a trip to Mexico.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held consultations with officials from the Health Ministry late on Tuesday, in which it was decided that as the disease outside of Mexico seems mild at the moment, preparations in Israel would be based on existing procedures and World Health Organisation guidelines, Israel Radio said.
The first Israeli who contracted the virus was hospitalised on Saturday (April 25) after complaining of flu-like symptoms following his return from a visit to Mexico. The latest case was another man who had been hospitalised with similar symptoms.
Israel's deputy health minister said on Monday that health authorities were well prepared to handle any outbreak of the new strain of flu virus. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
