- Story Text: The Israeli army redeployed its troops late on Monday night (July 17), retreating from the northern part of Gaza where the army has been present on and off for over three weeks.
Israel began an offensive on Gaza after Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas' armed wing, conducted a cross border raid on an army post on June 25, in which an Israeli soldier was captured and taken captive into Gaza and two soldiers were killed
About 90 Palestinians, almost half of them civilians, have been killed since the start of the Gaza offensive pegged 'Summer Rain' by the Israeli army.
The operation aims to bring back the abducted soldier and will go on until the soldier is brought back without any conditions, the Israeli government says.
Israel has bombed several buildings used by Hamas and its elected leaders, including the office of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and the Foreign Ministry.
Hamas, which controls the Palestinian government, is demanding that Israel frees Palestinian prisoners, which number close to 10,000, in exchange for Shalit's release. Israel has rejected any exchange.
Hamas is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
