- Story Text: Monkeys and bears at Israel's safari cooled off on Tuesday (August 22) with frozen fruit treats during the country's worst heat wave since the start of the summer.
Searing temperatures and a blazing sun sent Israel's Ramat Gan safari animals into pools of water to cool off. While the animals tried to beat the heat by staying wet, the zoo trainers prepared them a little something extra to keep cool - special icicle treats.
Zoo staff stay the treats are very little trouble to make in order to provide a lot of relief for the animals.
"For example, behind me is the Syrian bear. Their caretakers made them icicle fish, it's a special icicle, anyone can make it at home," said one of the zoo trainer's at the safari. "You take water, sweetened juice - it is juice that is suitable for animals, not what we would use as human beings - you add grapes, a little bit of pepper, watermelon, fish and freeze it for a couple of days. When it is ready -- throw it to the animals on hot days like today."
Humans too flocked to Israel's beachfronts to seek refuge from the hot weather. Tel Aviv's beach was packed full with men, women and children making the most of the summer vacation before it comes to an end. ENDS. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
