- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday (February 12) met Foreign Minister and leader of the Kadima party as coalition talks continued after elections left Israel facing a political gridlock.
Olmert and Tzipi Livni met in Tel Aviv's defense ministry headquarters, a highly secured compound that also hosts army headquarters.
Livni's centrist Kadima party won the most votes in the election but had little chance of building enough support for a resilient coalition government. Right-wing opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu can get the backing in parliament, but analysts said the likely alliance would prove dysfunctional.
Israeli President Shimon Peres must now decide whether to call on Livni or Netanyahu. Either would then have 42 days to form a government. An official election tally is due out by February 18, after which Peres would have a week to make his nomination. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
