- Story Text: It appears that the status of Tel Aviv as "The White City" not only applies to its Old Bauhaus buildings, but also to the colour of underwear worn by its residents.
At least 500 Israelis on Wednesday (May 27) undressed in the central square, sporting white "Sloggi" underwear, for a group photo-shoot marking the 100th anniversary of the vibrant coastal Israeli city.
The event was organised by the underwear company, Sloggi.
The spectacle was inspired by the work of American photographer Spencer Tunik, who is best known for his photos of nude people who have posed for him on every corner of the world.
But despite the secular features of the city of Tel Aviv, the event organisers decided it would be best to avoid controversy and not display full nudity.
Passers-by in Tel Aviv's Dizengoff's street stopped and watched the surprising sight, as men and women of all ages, and sizes posed for the shoot.
"You see people of all different shape and sizes coming out here, Not just people who have perfect bodies and are putting them out on display and are saying that they are proud of themselves and that they are having a good time. Every one is here just to have a good time," said Tel Aviv resident Ela Ronen.
Media crews gathered at the scene, taking pictures, as make-up crews prepared them for the photo, which is expected to go on display in a local museum.
"By accident I got just a group of people, nobody is looking at the camera. I wanted to kind of give it a looking feel, which is totally not looking to the camera or not... no reaction to the camera," said Photographer Ziv Koren.
"It's like to go to the beach, but with 'Sloggi'. And I think it's something we can do only once in my life," added Mor Shamir, a Tel Aviv resident.
Tel Aviv, which boasts many 1930s Modernist buildings inspired by Germany's Bauhaus school, is also dubbed "the White City" and was declared a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
