- Story Text: Hungary's Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai held a series of meetings with Israeli leaders on Tuesday (June 23) before visiting Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.
Bajnai, on a two-day visit to the region, met Israeli President Shimon Peres in his Jerusalem residence. The two leaders discussed the situation in Iran as well as other regional issues.
"People are sacrificing their lives under a terrible regime, to win freedom and human rights, women rights, and it has an impact upon many of our neighbours. It also, I mean, if the...Ahmedinejad will win, it's frightening them," Peres said during the meeting.
The Hungarian premier replied by saying that Iran's future is a key to world peace.
"We would think that the future of Iran is certainly a key to the peace, not only the Middle East but in a wider sense for Europe and for the whole world," Bajnai said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bajnai met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They held a private breakfast after which Netanyahu headed to Europe where he is scheduled to meet Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Bajnai also visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem where he laid a wreath at the Hall of Remembrance, as part of a ceremony to commemorate the six million Jews killed by the Nazis.
Later on Tuesday Bajnai is scheduled to visit the Old City of Jerusalem. On Wednesday (June 24) Bajnai is expected to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Israeli businessmen before leaving back to Europe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
