- Story Text: Israel's army on Thursday morning (October 14) patrolled the border with Lebanon ahead of a planned visit to southern Lebanon by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
An Israeli military spokeswoman told Reuters Television that the army would not comment on reports of heightened alert on the Lebanese border.
Later on Thursday Ahmadinejad is scheduled to visit the southern Lebanese towns of Maroon al-Ras and Bint Jbeil, only few hundred meters from Israel, at the end of a two-day visit in Lebanon.
In Maroon al-Ras, clearly seen from the Israeli border, a new promenade was built ahead of the presidential visit with a model of Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque.
On Wednesday (October 13), Ahmadinejad used a visit to Lebanon to assure the government that Iran would stand by Beirut in confronting what he called hostilities from neighbouring Israel.
Ahmadinejad, making the first official state visit by an Iranian president to Lebanon, was given a tumultuous welcome by thousands of Shi'ite Muslims who lined the road from the airport, throwing rice and petals at his motorcade.
Israel fought a 34-day war in 2006 with Tehran's Shi'ite ally Hezbollah, a conflict which killed 1,200 people in Lebanon and 158 Israelis.
Ahmadinejad told a rally organised by Hezbollah on Wednesday that Israel would pay a price for any aggressive action. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
