- Story Text: Security was high as Israel's national women volleyball team arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara for a tournament on Saturday (July 24) as tensions continue
to run high between two countries over Israel's bloody storming of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turkish activists dead in May.
The Israeli team were in Turkey to attend 2010 Women's European Volleyball League finals.
Apart from Turkish police, Israeli security officials were also present to secure the volleyball team.
Dozens of people gathered around the venue, demanding the cancellation of Israel's match against Serbia.
Chanting anti-Israeli slogans, the protesters tried to break up the barricade and enter the venue to stop the game.
"The Israeli volleyball team has come here with bloody-handed Moused agents. We have gathered here today to prevent them from
playing a sports match," protester Hams Er said in a statement on behalf of the group.
Tensions between Turkey and Israel are still high after Israeli commandos raided a flotilla carrying aid from Turkey to the Gaza strip, killing nine activists.
Four matches between Turkey and Israel were cancelled previously due to the flotilla incident.
Israel had requested heavy security from Turkey for the volleyball team.
