- Story Text: Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations did not skip men's best friend and accompany. More than a thousand dogs and many more dog owners participated on Saturday (May 17) in the International Dog Show, organized by the Israel Kennel Club (IKC), focusing on the state's independence anniversary.
Organizers say that dogs from 200 breeds participated in various competitions and shows. The most popular event was the agility contest, where the canines are expected to show their wisdom and quickness while going through an obstacle course as fast and orderly as possible. Another popular show confronted specially trained attack dogs with trainers wearing heavy padding, to the delight of the crowds.
Some dogs prepared for the more conventional dog displays, and their owners spent long hours pampering, brushing and cleaning them ahead of the competitions. Judges in the event came from all over the world, including professionals from Norway, Poland, Italy and of course from Israel.
"We have over 200 breeds here I think today, over a thousand dogs from these various breeds, people come to show, there is also agility test, and demonstrations of training. People come to have a good time with their dogs, and to gain titles for their dogs, to show off their dogs, and it's a beautiful day today," said event organizer and international Judge, Mirna Shibolet.
During the event, the IKC unveiled a special anniversary survey conducted among Israelis over the past year, asking what type of dog should be considered as "The Dog of Israel". Surprisingly, although the Israeli national dog is the Canaanite dog, most Israeli men feel that the German Shepherd is more suitable to represent their state. Israeli women, however, believe it is the Labrador Retriever who should be chosen as the star of Israel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
