Israel celebrated it's 59th Independence Day Monday (April 23), with ceremonies and fireworks.
In Tel Aviv one of the Azrieli towers was lit to resemble the flag of Israel.
In Jerusalem a nationally televised ceremony was held at Mt. Hertzl.
At the ceremony, interim Israeli President Dalia Itzik said Israelis needed to keep high spirits.
"We have no room for humiliated eyes, for the loss of enthusiasm. It is still not the hour to lay down the grape and fig leaves and we cannot allow the voices to break our spirits. We will open the 59th anniversary celebrations for the nation of Israel. We are moving on," Itzik said.
Israel's population in 2007 is almost 7 million people. The population is nine times larger than when the state of Israel was established in 1948. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
