- Story Text: The original manuscript of Albert Einstein's revolutionary General Theory of Relativity, which consists of 46 hand written pages, is being displayed for the first time in Jerusalem.
The original manuscript of Albert Einstein's landmark General Theory of Relativity has, for the first time, gone on display at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, giving a rare glimpse into the mind of the world's most renowned scientist.
The exhibition, featuring 46 handwritten pages displayed in carefully controlled environment, marks the 50th anniversary of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, which coincided with Einstein's birthday.
Curator, Professor Hanoch Gutfreund, said that unlike previous exhibitions, the current one focuses only on Einstein's revolutionary theory and symbolizes the Jewish scientist's connection to his people.
"This is a very unique exhibition. Unlike many exhibitions that we have produced in the past and exhibited worldwide which shed light on the life of Albert Einstein, on his scientific achievements, on his public activities, this one focuses on one special document, the most important document, the manuscript of his general theory of relativity to which we refer as his masterpiece, actually it's an intellectual masterpiece. And it symbolizes more than anything else the special link between Albert Einstein and the Hebrew University and the Jewish people," Gutfreund said.
Einstein wrote the General Theory of Relativity in 1916 and revolutionized human understanding of space, time and gravity in modern times. In 1925 he donated the manuscript of the theory to the Hebrew university of Jerusalem, which was founded in the same year.
The documents, which were kept for 85 years in the University's archives, will be on display until March 25 in Israel's Academy of Sciences and Humanities. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
