- Story Text: The West German destroyer "Bayern" arrived in the northern Israeli port of Haifa on Monday (June 4) for a five-day official visit -- the first German warship to dock in Israel.
On Tuesday (June 5), the ships, complement of 270 was given shore leave to visit Jerusalem's Yad Vashem, Holocaust Memorial, the Dead Sea and other tourist areas.
Captain Viktor Toyka said that, although he had initially felt "uncertain" about the visit, he and his men had experienced "a great deal of friendliness and warmth" in the Jewish state.
He told reporters at Haifa port that he was "proud and glad my ship and crew were chosen to come here", and added: "I think it is opening a new generation of relations between our two countries".
Israeli officials said that some of the warship's crew would be invited to dine at the homes of local families in an effort to enhance the importance of the visit.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the West German state of Westphalia visited Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial on Tuesday (June 5).Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Schoor said afterwards that it was a "moving experience to be in Israel and at Yad Vashem, to remember people who died in that period in Germany".
The six-member group was due to visit other sites in Israel as well as paying courtesy calls on Israeli government officials. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
