- Story Text: Israeli chefs said on Wednesday (September 20, 2006) they made the world's biggest Gefilte Fish just in time to consume it for the Jewish New Year.
The huge loaf of fish -- a traditional dish eaten during the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana feast - was made by an Israeli chef at the Newe Ilan hotel, in the suburbs of Jerusalem.
The hotel's manager, Armen Grunervald, said the massive fish loaf, shaped in the form of a fish, would be served on the eve of Rosh Hashana on Friday (September 22).
Grunervald said he believed the 50-kilograms of fish was the biggest in the world but has yet to confirm it with the Guinness Book of World Records.
"From what we know it's the biggest gefilte fish that's been done for Rosh Hashana," said Grunervald.
Popular among the Ashkenazi heritage, the ground de-boned fish consisting of a variety of fish meat that is then made into fish loaves or balls, is served at the start of the meal.
Grunervald said the fish loaf consisted of least 25 kilograms of fish, 200 eggs and five kilograms of flour.
The fish loaf, formally, is a type of quenelle -- a delicately flavored patty made of lightly seasoned ground fish or white meat. Similar dishes exist in many cultures in local recipes bland or spicy, served plain or sauced, and cooked in simple broth or as part of an elaborate fish stew.
Jews around the world will begin celebrating the start of the Jewish New Year this weekend. Traditionally, families have a two-day feast ahead of the day of attonement, Yom Kippur, when Jews ask for forgiveness and for a good year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
