- Story Text: Two workers of a sandwich shop -- located next door to the bakery where a Palestinian suicide bomber killed three people on Monday (January 29) -- told Reuters television on Tuesday (January 30) about the experience after they found out they were caught on a surveillance camera installed in their shop during the explosion.
The security camera video shows the two men working in the shop in the Israeli southern resort town of Eilat, when a man who was later identified by witnesses as the bomber, walking past seconds before he detonated his deadly charge.
Shortly after the explosion shook the shop, the men are seen running out.
"My landlord was here, I went to the kitchen to prepare some things and then the explosion took place. My landlord was here and then he came to me to the kitchen and all that was left was ruins all over the place. They called us to come outside, we came outside," Asher Oroni, one of the men, told Reuters.
"It was awful, we tried to help someone but realised it was in vain, and we went outside and called the police and whoever had to be there," added Uri Gez.
The bombing in Eilat, one of Israel's most popular holiday spots, was the first such attack in the Jewish state in nine months.
Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed joint responsibility for the bombing.
The attack -- the first time Eilat has been hit by a suicide bombing -- came four days before the so-called Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators was to meet in Washington as part of a renewed effort to revive Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.
Islamic Jihad and the Aqsa brigades said the bombing was a response to Israeli "attempts to defile al-Aqsa mosque" in Jerusalem, a reference to recent archaeological excavations. Israeli officials said the work had not damaged the shrine.
Also on Tuesday, scores of men and women gathered at Eilat cemetery to bury 23-year-old Emil Almaliakh who was killed in Monday's attack.
His body was wrapped in an Israeli flag when men carried it into the funeral house. The crowd burst into tears as a Rabbi said a Jewish prayer for the dead. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
